I imagine that American Football is probably more dangerous when you bring concussions into account. Fireball only happens one day every year. I have no idea how long and dangerous American Football season is between training and matches. Also, I feel like balls of fire are a lot easier to dodge and less surprising that a 220lb man tackling you out of nowhere.
