For twenty years, photographer Shannon Taggart has been taking pictures of the world’s largest Spiritualist community in Lily Dale, New York - and other smaller communities around the world.
In her exciting quest to capture the invisible, Ms Taggart achieved surprising results. Her search for the ectoplasm - a substance believed to be both spiritual and material - lead her to explore not only the tricks of the trade and its neglected photographic history, but also its lesser-known links to science, prominent historical and intellectual figures, and the women's rights movement.

I like how the choice of music effectively editorialises the story.

The more a documentary uses music the less I trust it. That and deliberately unflattering photos of people.

I was really expecting some ghosts photographs taken by her or an event were she found some spirit in her photos.

This is the type of person who is "shocked" that a medium at a tourist trap town told her friend that they spoke to her grandfather. I, for my part, am shocked that she can afford to spend twenty years on this.

So weird how only the people who belong to these communities are able to take these photos

Ifthere were real ghosts and if they were floating around EVERYONE who takes a picture would have a chance of catching them. The only conslusion is that there simply are no ghosts.

@𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖒𝖔𝖓𝖉 I am fine with no life after death. Are YOU?

@𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖒𝖔𝖓𝖉 Go ahead and count on an after life and don't do anything in this life.

@L A Green that’s your opinion.

@𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖒𝖔𝖓𝖉 The thing you call a 'soul' is a collection of memories in the brain. When the body dies all of the cells die too. Nothing is left. Believe in ghosts if it makes you happy, but there will never be proof since they just don't exist.

i wonder how much value it is that i can channel , it seems like a curse. it is somthing that puts my relationship to christ and the God of my understanding . my mother is a good christian and my mother family is also either catholic or southern babtist and she raised us in a non denomonenational fellowship . on the other side is a whole other thing that is deep in esoteric occult and newage belief on my fathers side so i have been attacked by demons and also i have been able to do things that are scary to most but i dont know anyone who has had all my experiences and so i find a place like this interesting and dont know should i stay away ? i suppose i shall just pray and ask for help.

Well that's a waste of 7.08 of your time, surely the BBC doesn't have that much spare money around that they can waste it on things like this?

I saw the Hilma Af Klint exhibit at the Guggenheim. The work is absolutely stunning. But the attempt to shoehorn it into Abstract Expressionism is an extremely clumsy argument. We should be able to appreciate Spiritualist Art and indeed the art movements excelled at by women for what they are and not try to shoehorn them into other established genres just because art historians tend to be white men without much imagination.

Election deniers and QAnuts take note: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! BTW: If "ectoplasm is a substance . . . " where are the samples? Also: Eight BILLION people on Earth now, billions more before, and STILL no peer-reviewed repeatable experimentation? Lastly: Hahahahaha!
