What do Genghis Khan, the American Civil War and the UK’s health service have in common? The answer is, perhaps surprisingly, maggots.
Dr Erica McAlister, an entomologist and Senior Curator at the Natural History Museum in the UK, explores how having maggots munching away at the decaying flesh of a wound might not be as terrible as it sounds. In fact, as it turns out, the humble maggot is actually a medical marvel!

I used to work at a hospital where they used maggots to help diabetic patients with wounds that just would not heal. They also used medical honey on burns. It was fascinating.

Maggots and leeches. They both sound so unappealing, yet they are both very impressive tools that can help save our lives.

It happens in a lot of words of non-English origin. We say referendums but rarely referenda. We say data but not datum. We say pierogies but it should just be pierogi (since it's already plural in Polish). Languages evolve and suit the use and needs of the speakers of that particular dialect or language entirely. The UK or Australia may say something one way that doesn't make sense in Canada or the US. Not to mention the common belief that Octopus should be pluralised as "octopi" which is not necessarily true. It's a Greek word, not Latin and should therefore be octopodes but English plurals also uses "es"... So the English plural of octopus is indeed octopuses. The British say "I am/was sat" instead of the more common "I am/was sitting" in other Englishes. Languages and dialectical differences are truly fascinating!

That's right! I'm Greek and it hurts me to see this mistake being made so often.

I have a funny story. My children and I went away for a week and I left my husband home alone. I forgot to tell him I had made a homemade chicken pot pie and left it in the oven. I came home a week later and the smell caught my attention and I went to the oven and what did I see, that pie with maggots all over it.
